Research summary
Knorr-Bremse worked with CSIRO to test the in-service durability of air conditioning units in different parts of the world. The project determined which factors were likely to influence the durability of the air conditioning systems and a framework was constructed which could enable the development of durability tests for components of the systems. Predictive tests were specifically developed and run to see if fan motors from potential suppliers would stand up to the likely conditions seen in service.

Key achievements
- A framework of durability factors was developed which can be used to specify tests on critical air conditioner components.
- From the framework, tests were developed at CSIRO to replicate the conditions that the motors would be exposed to in-service.
- The acceleration of fan motor failure for the comparison of different motors proved difficult due to the high durability of the motors.
- It was shown that a low-cost motor failed in the performance tests while the supplied quality motors didn’t.
