PhD topic – Improvement of flashbutt welds in premium rails

Research summary

The quality of flashbutt welds has been a persistent issue in the rail industry, and given the industry wide move to ever higher strength rail grades with increasing alloy content, is becoming even more important. This project is looking to understand the key factors in both the rail steel and the rail welding process to identify optimal conditions for the welding process, as well as for options for more comprehensive rail and welding specifications.
