PhD topic – Hybrid unmanned aerial system for railway inspection

Dongyu Zhang

Research summary

Railway inspection is currently conducted by human inspectors, which is slow and dangerous. In order to reduce the unique set of safety risks originated from railway environments and increase the efficiency and accuracy, an autonomous Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) will play a key role in railway inspection. This project proposes the development of a hybrid UAS that can be dispatched to a specific section of the track, landing on the rail to perform preliminary scans for several kilometres using a light-weight sensor suite.

Expected completion date

December 2020

Key achievements

  • Design and implement a rail measurement robot for vision based measurement
  • Develop and modify the procedure of using 3D reconstruction to measure the rail profile
  • Evaluate the proposed method in both controlled and real-world rail track environments
