Due to health and safety, and productivity considerations, increased attention is being paid to controlling weld fume. With any potential hazard, the most effective means of control is to limit generation at the source. CSIRO’s high deposition MIG tip invention provides improved control, enabling welding under more stable operating conditions that reduce weld fume generation

- The team developed new weld tip designs which, when combined with optimal weld parameters for the specific designs, demonstrated potential for a reduction in weld fume generated by 50 per cent.
- The optimal weld parameters were developed for a range of conditions using CSIRO developed MIG Weld software, which optimised the welding parameters for the new tips.
- The potential benefits of the project are not only in productivity improvements, but more importantly the reduction in the exposure of welders to weld fumes, which has significant health and safety benefits.
