Protection of cast steel coupler from corrosion by cold spray

Research summary

Couplers are the linkage between rail cars which allow for movement , with corrosion fatigue a common failure mechanism due to increased gross weight and length of freight trains. In response, cold spray is a metal coating technology that uses a supersonic jet to accelerate particles towards a substrate so that they deform and bond. This project investigated the use of cold spray to mitigate coupling cracking.

Key achievements

  • The coating of zinc onto steel substrates using cold spray achieved all of the required parameters of speed of application, coating thickness, density, bond strength and corrosion performance.
  • A key achievement of the project was the significant improvement in adhesion of the coating that was addressed as a variation to the project.
  • The benefits of the cold spray process over other zinc coating methods is the density and consistency of the coating to provide corrosion protection.
