Laser repair of railway cast components

When casting steel components, defects can occur which can be a significant problem to fix or replace. In response, CRRC and CSIRO investigated the potential for these defects to be repaired by a high power (4 kW) industrial system using a high-power laser beam as a heat source to melt compatible metal powder blown into the laser beam.

- The project team developed a robotic process to repair casting defects of railway components by rapid laser repair.
- A number of metal powder compositions were prepared and assessed to determine the composition and laser parameters to repair defects, resulting in a crack free repair with mechanical properties matching that of the original defect-free cast component.
- Model investigation was also employed to predict residual stresses and cracking behaviour in the laser repaired zones. These studies have provided enough confidence for the laser technology to be applied in industrial applications.
