PhD topic – New generation lithium-ion batteries with high energy and long service life.

Shuoqing Zhao

Research summary

This research was focused around developing new anode and cathode materials for lithium ion batteries, with the potential to enable higher energy density and a longer cycle life. This could be used for propulsion and enabling regenerative braking of the train, signalling systems and auxiliary applications such as the train’s air conditioning and back-up power needs.

Completion date

February 2021

Key achievements

  • Design and preparation of new lithium-rich cathode materials.
  • Complete the milestone of the cathode part.
  • Visiting HEC for project discussion and further industrial cooperation.
  • Published two high-level papers as the first author.
